Behind the Seams: The Women Behind Our Clothes
Share
A note from Elle on the women who make our clothes, the care they give, and the support we hope to offer.
When I visited garment factories in Guangzhou, I met women whose working lives extended far beyond the sewing table. Alongside paid work, they were raising children, looking after their families, and finding ways to fit both into the same day.
What stayed with me was how much those responsibilities shaped their choices: when they could work, how long they could stay, and which opportunities they could take.

he work beyond the working day
Some women had stepped away from paid employment to care for young children. Returning to the factory meant rebuilding skills and confidence while family responsibilities continued. For others, flexible piecework made it possible to earn an income while caring for a child, but it could also mean doing both at once.
Flexibility matters. So does recognising that a flexible schedule does not make the work of caring disappear. A longer shift or a promotion may be difficult to accept when there is no one else to take over at home.
These experiences made me think more carefully about what it means for Elle Curate to support women. Their skills deserve recognition, and their time, needs, and ambitions deserve space too.

Introducing Ellecurate for Her
We are developing Ellecurate for Her to turn that concern into practical, ongoing support. Our plan is to set aside a contribution for every product sold, funded by Elle Curate at no extra charge to our customers.
The money allocated to this initiative will support two connected priorities: women managing the demands of work and family today, and girls building possibilities for the future.
60%: Direct support for women workers
We plan to allocate 60% of the initiative's funds to direct financial assistance for women workers in need at our partner factories, with particular attention to those carrying family caregiving responsibilities.
Elle Curate team members will visit the factories and deliver the assistance directly to the women receiving it, on a monthly or quarterly schedule. Our priority is for this support to reach the intended recipients and help ease the financial pressures of everyday life.
40%: Education and future choices for girls
The remaining 40% will be donated through a girls' education assistance project on the Tencent Charity platform. We want to help girls facing financial barriers continue their education.
Education can broaden future employment opportunities and give girls more choices about the lives they want to lead. Supporting their learning is a way to invest in that possibility.
Following the support through
We are putting the arrangements in place and will share the selected education project, the distribution schedule, and updates as the initiative progresses. We intend to document direct assistance and project donations, while respecting recipients' privacy.
This begins with a simple intention: to make support tangible in the lives of the people it is meant for. We will keep listening as we learn how to do that well.
Thank you for being part of Elle Curate, and for taking the time to learn about the women behind our clothes.
With love,
Elle
